snow i rebuke thee. i was born in a town that i love, and a climate i hate. so i choose to rebuke winter in the midst of this insane snow. harnessing the skills learned from listening to oprah talk about that book the secret, i'll positive affirmation my way out of this snowy misery. as burger king says, have it your way. i bring you heat served dim sum style...many styles. enjoy. viva la snow rev-oh-luuuu-say-yawn.

spikes joint...update, i'm late!
this is called beyond procrastination. i had it on my mental checklist to go to spikes joint, store owned by famed director spike lee in the fort greene section of brooklyn, since well....ever since i heard it had opened. i just didn't realize both how fast time had flown, and how far gone my mental checklist had gotten. (note to self...time to scratch or skip the list). so on a little google quest getting ready for a trip to bk borough i find out (school daze spike moment "waaaaaaaaaaaaaake uuuuuuuuup!"), that friggin store has been shuttered since 97'. that is ridiculous. i lower my head, hope for flyjunkie attonment, and offer you this as a reprieve.(oh boy, shaking my head)

iconography...ladies first--dee barnes
there are two ways to remember dee barnes. one...as a note to self of why you loath dr. dre and should never forget what a *@#%@#$*&%! he really is before supporting his bank account. two...as the flyest chick that like ever was. the original cool girl with the dopest style and vibe. she gave the most inspiration that a girl, with a brother as her only style reference and no cable tv, could acess from her living room. i still have taped episodes of pump it up on vhs, meticulously recorded by my brother and me. check the historical references below and tell me her style, like goverment cheese, still doesn't hold up with time.
classic
she was so much cooler than i remembered. i didn't even know she was behind this classic joint.

iconography...the birth of the cool

_1977.jpg)

here's what i want to make a regular feature (mainly so i clear some space on this inspiration board going on in my head). and wouldn't it be just a sweet coincidence that i was able to start the year off by catching the last day of this Barkley L. Hendricks exibit at the p.a.f.a. (note to self "resolve to stop friggin' procastinating so much this year"). i love that he is from philly and you can feel it in the swag (sorry last time i'll use that word) of his potraiture. long before the satorialist blog, and street style feeds from hipsters worldwide i present to you...
...p.s. fellow junkies if you, like me, wanna be the envy of all the kids on the block scoop the leading image sweet-tee jawn from the p.a.f.a. gift shop if in the city or at www.pafa.org. it'll make you feel good good good good!

Random and shamless self indulgence of the best kind
one time a high school friend of mine said "you know what i love about black people?". and i'm like "what?" and they said to me, " the way they will just be walking down the street and just randomly break into a ryhme" (ala the dave chapelle skit where questlove starts drumming and the brothers in the barbershop start freestyling on autopilot to a drum beat). And before i could start ranting about how sambo of a sterotype that was...(the necessity of us rhyming like the need to sing "wade in the water" till freedom come, we just love to perform so) i shut myself up. cause i realized that i didn't have enough fingers and toes on me or my family to count how many times i've watched my youth walk down the street(alone normally) and just break into a ryhme pre-ringtone era...or broken walkman/discman era. biggie, jay, epmd,....me doing ll cool j's round the way girl. it was reciting rap scripture...easily remembered and regergitated at will for our entertainment purposes. and on the eve of the new year it was a twinkle of nice to watch a segment on today show this morning bring attention to a program that reporposes that natural ease of lyric playback. the educational program "flocabulary", that uses rap to teach various school subjects, appears to be the the complete antethesis to the retro "ebonics" debated in oakland , ca way back in 96'. some times sequels are better. especially when the producers respect the audience and the source material. see for yourself ...also, prior to hearing about this progrom, one of my favorite rhymes heard or unheard for strictly lyrical cuteness follows.

so i feel like i should give a proper introduction to this collection. things with what i consider a common asthetic. i am a horder of these images and styles in my mind's scrapbook. i break them out to share with friends because they make me smile, and have the proven stamp of timelessness. these images, fashions, designs, ideas, jokes, concepts, etc. are in the junkyard of my head and i think they're fly. sometimes they're corny. sometimes they're considered tacky. but i love them and plan to share them and remember or intoduce them here to you. alright formality is not me. enough with the small talk. and hello.
